Heat pump system – UAE – Viessmann
A heat pump is an electric device that delivers heat to a low temperature (source), and then brings it to a higher temperature (sink). To understand this process, consider riding a bicycle over a hill: No effort is required from the top of the hill to the bottom, as the bike and the rider will naturally move from the top to the bottom. However, climbing a hill requires a lot of work, as the bike moves against the natural direction of movement.
In the same way, heat naturally flows from areas with high temperatures to areas with low temperatures (e.g., in winter, heat from inside the building is lost to the outside). The heat pump uses additional electrical energy to withstand the natural flow of heat, and pumps energy from cold to warm. So how does a heat pump heat up or cool your home? As energy is released from the well, the temperature of the well is reduced. If the home is used as a source, heat energy will be removed, cooling the space. This is how the heat pump works in cooling mode, and it is the same system used for air conditioners and refrigerators. Similarly, as more energy is added to the sink, its temperature rises. If the home is used as a sink, heat will be added, heating the space. The heat pump is completely reversible, which means it can warm and cool your home, giving you a year-round comfort.
Important Terminology for Heat Pump Systems :
Refrigerator is a fluid that circulates in a heat pump, absorbs it, evaporates and releases heat. Depending on its location, the liquid may be a liquid, a gas, or a mixture of gas / vapor
The reversible valve controls the direction of the refrigerator flow to the heat pump and shifts the heat pump from the heat to the cooling mode or vice versa.
The coil is a loop, or loop, of a tube through which heat is transferred between the source / sink and refrigerator. Tubes may have wings to increase the surface area available for heat exchange.
An evaporator is a coil where the refrigerator draws heat from the surrounding area and boils it into a low-temperature vapor. As the refrigerator passes from the receding valve to the compressor, the accumulator collects any excess liquid that has not evaporated into the gas.
The compressor presses the refrigerator gas molecules together, increasing the temperature of the refrigerator. This device helps to transfer heat energy between the source and the sink.
A condenser is a coil where the refrigerator releases heat to the surrounding area and becomes a liquid.
The expansion device reduces the pressure generated by the compressor. This causes the temperature to drop, and the refrigerator to become a low vapor / liquid mixture.
An outdoor unit is where heat is transferred to / from the outside air by a heat source heat pump. This unit usually consists of a heat exchange coil, a compressor, and an expansion valve. It looks and works in the same way as the outer part of the air-conditioner.
Indoor coil is where heat is transferred to / from indoor air by certain types of air source heat pumps. Typically, an indoor unit contains a heat exchange coil, and may include additional furniture to move hot or cold air into the living space.
The plenum, seen only in the pulse input, is part of the air distribution network. The plenum is an air space that forms part of a system to distribute hot or cool air in a house. It is usually a large part immediately above or near the temperature switch.
There is also a air heat pump that is often integrated with an existing heating system and boiler. In these mixed air heat pump systems, the heat pump provides the ‘basic load’ of daily heating and hot water. The boiler burns only to provide hot water. Or rapid heating during a very cold snap. The retractable valve, close to the pressure, can change the direction of refrigeration flow in cooling mode and melt the outer coil in winter.
